The Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) has requested Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to extend the credit facilities granted to Sri Lanka, a party official said.

Making his remarks to Daily Mirror over the phone from India, CWC President Senthil Thondaman said a party delegation called on her and made the request.

The party also handed over a letter. The CWC, a party representing the Tamils of Indian origin in Sri Lanka, sought the enhancement of Line of Credit for food, medicines, fuel and gas.

The party also said the financial institutions of India established in Sri Lanka, should bring in a new policy to support the existing Indian investors and Sri Lankan industries in Sri Lanka. They should initiate programmes to encourage new investments from India which will help to stabilize the Sri Lankan economy. “India being the closest neighbour, most of our food essentials are being imported from India. Considering the ongoing food crisis in Sri Lanka, I would like to request you to allow certain export restricted food items on Government to Government basis,” Mr. Thondaman wrote.
