A soldier was arrested yesterday by Diyatalawa Police on suspicion of sexually abusing a 14-year-old schoolgirl.
The 21-year-old suspect attached to a military camp in Murukkan in Kilinochchi was a resident of the Boralanda area.

The victim, a resident of Galedanda in Diyatalawa, was  referred to the JMO Diyatalawa General Hospital for medical  examination.

Investigations revealed that the girl had fallen in love  with the suspect after he gave up relations with another girl known  to her. On the night of the incident, she had gone to her grandmother’s  house to sleep and given a telephone call to the suspect and told him to  meet her.

The suspect had taken the girl to a lonely place in the Bokotuwa area in close proximity to her grandmother’s house and sexually  abused her.

Meanwhile, the grandmother who found her missing had informed  her parents and when they were searching for her, she had returned with  the suspect. After realizing all that happened, they had handed over the suspect to the police.

OIC Diyatalawa Police CI Sagara Dayaratne is conducting further investigations on the instructions of ASP Ruwan Fernando.
