The Sri Lankan Meteorology Department has issued an official advisory warning of a significant rise in the heat index today (6), particularly affecting Sabaragamuwa Province and several nearby districts.
The advisory includes a colour-coded map and table outlining potential health risks, ranging from fatigue and dehydration to more severe conditions such as heat stroke. Officials are urging residents to take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses. Recommended safety measures include staying hydrated, wearing light-coloured clothing, and avoiding strenuous physical activities during peak heat hours.
The Department clarified that the heat index reflects the perceived temperature, factoring in humidity levels, rather than just the actual air temperature. Authorities also stressed the importance of monitoring vulnerable populations, including the elderly, and warned against leaving children unattended in vehicles during periods of high thermal stress.
Residents are advised to stay updated with Meteorology Department bulletins and take necessary steps to safeguard their health.
