The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to procure 152 megawatts of electricity generated from ground-mounted solar panel systems through an international competitive bidding process, as part of the government’s long-term strategy to increase the share of renewable energy in the national grid.

According to the Long-Term Generation Expansion Plan 2023–2042, the government aims to meet 70% of the country’s energy needs through renewable sources by 2030. In line with this target, and considering the steady decline in projected electricity demand alongside the rapid expansion of rooftop solar systems, authorities have identified 18 grid substations capable of accommodating an additional 152MW from ground-mounted solar installations.

The Cabinet approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Power to reserve the full 152MW grid capacity for procurement through international competitive bidding. The process will be carried out under a build-own-operate (BOO) model, inviting project developers to submit proposals for the construction, ownership, and operation of solar power projects.
