Faulty auspicious times for Sinhala New Year rituals sparks controversy

The National Committee of Astrologers has raised objections to the auspicious timing designated for performing Sinhala New Year rituals, alleging inaccuracies in the schedule. The committee took their concerns to the esteemed Anunayakas of the Malwatta and Asgiriya Chapters, seeking rectification of what they deem as flawed timings.  

During a meeting with Ven. Dimbulkumbure Ariyadhamma Thera of the Malwatta Chapter and Ven. Wendaruwe Upali Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter, members of the committee expressed their dismay over what they described as manipulated auspicious times for the crucial rituals associated with the Sinhala New Year festivities.  
Highlighting their discontent, the astrologers pointed out discrepancies in the timings allocated for the preparation and consumption of the first meal of the year. They emphasized the necessity for amendments to the schedule to ensure accuracy and adherence to astrological principles.  

Responding to queries posed by the Anunayaka Thera of the Malwatta Chapter, concerns were raised regarding the alleged politicization of appointments to the State Committee on Auspicious Times, attributing it to the present state of affairs.  

Expressing grave concern over what they perceive as interference in a nationally significant event where adherence to auspicious timings is paramount, Ven. Thera underscored the urgency of rectifying the situation. He pledged to provide guidance and directives towards formulating an accurate schedule free from any shortcomings.  

Adding weight to the objections raised, Astrologer Numinda Shanthasiri de Silva, a member of the Cultural Department’s State Committee on Auspicious Times, criticized the haphazard manner in which the schedule was drawn up, disregarding fundamental principles of astrology. He echoed the sentiments of the National Committee of Astrologers, urging the State Committee on Auspicious Times to revise the schedule promptly to ensure the integrity of the Sinhala and Hindu New Year rituals.
