FCID will be re-established next week: Minister

  • Says the CID possesses over 29,000 files  pertaining to various crimes

The Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) will be re-established  next week as a means to fight crimes, Minister of Public Security and  Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala told Parliament yesterday.   
“Sri Lanka has become a land of crimes, and steps will be  taken to change this situation. There was much talk about 500 files  pertaining to various crimes that have been committed over the years.  However, we would like to state that the CID possesses over 29,000 files  pertaining to various crimes, including financial crimes. FCID will be  re-established next week and many investigations will get underway  then,” the Minister said.    

The Minister further disclosed that a handful of military  personnel are involved in crime, tarnishing the image of the forces. “An  army major, six others who hold various ranks in the forces, a policeman,  and 15 others have been arrested in connection with various organised  crimes,” he said.   
“Around 60 T56 rifles, ten pistols, 14 revolvers, 58 12-bore guns and 12 galkattas have been recovered by the police from  September 21, 2024 to date. In addition, 345 kgs of heroin, 3848 kgs of  Kerala ganja ,3.8 kgs of cocaine and 14, 759 kgs of Ice have also been  recovered during the given period,” the Minister revealed.
