The Election Commission (EC) has dismissed requests from several political parties to reconsider the rejection of nominations for the upcoming Local Government elections.

Elections Commission Chairman R. M. A. L. Rathnayake told Daily Mirror that the nominations were rejected in accordance with the Election Act and cannot be reconsidered under any circumstances.
“All rejections were made strictly following legal provisions and there is no possibility of revisiting or reversing those decisions for the EC,” Rathnayake stressed.
“All what political parties can do is to seek legal support as it is beyond the commission’s purview,” he added
This comes after representatives of several political parties appealed to the EC, urging it to review some of the 425 nomination papers that were disqualified during the nomination process.  Despite these concerns, preparations for the May 6 Local Government elections are moving forward with the printing of ballot papers now underway, according to the EC.
