It is the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) who should be worried about a possible court case and an investigation on the Batalanda detention camp, United National Party (UNP) Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene said.

Mr. Wijewardene was responding to a question raised by the journalists as to whether the government would checkmate former President Ranil Wickremesinghe by its decision to hand over the Batalanda Commission report to the Attorney General

“The report comprises details on violent activities carried out by the JVP during the 1987/89 insurrection. The only allegation that has been made against the former President is handing over the housing scheme, which belonged to the National Fertiliser Manufacturing Corporation, to the security forces. A security camp in Batalanda became necessary as the Sapugaskanda oil refinery was under threat during the insurrection. An attack on the refinery was expected during that time,” he said.

“Also, the government is merely trying to gain political mileage out of the Batalanda Commission,” he added.

The commission report was handed over to the Attorney General on April 29, 2025, just three weeks after Parliament took up a debate on it. The report was compiled and handed over to former President Chandrika Kumaratunga over 25 years ago.
