President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has extended warm congratulations to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming the longest-serving elected Prime Minister in the history of India.
In a letter dated June 8, President Dissanayake said the achievement reflected not only Modi’s years in office but also the continued trust and confidence placed in his leadership by the people of India.
The President noted that securing public mandates in successive elections in the world’s largest democracy was a remarkable accomplishment and a testament to Modi’s governance capabilities and ability to maintain public confidence through periods of both opportunity and challenge.
Highlighting India’s economic and social progress during Modi’s tenure, President Dissanayake said millions of Indians had benefited from improvements in infrastructure, financial inclusion, digital connectivity, public services and economic opportunities. He added that India had strengthened its position as a leading global economy and an increasingly influential voice in regional and international affairs.
The President also commended PM Modi’s vision for a dynamic and economically strong India, describing it as an inspiration beyond India’s borders, including in Sri Lanka.
Referring to bilateral relations, President Dissanayake said Sri Lanka had been privileged to work closely with India during a period of significant transformation. He noted that ties between the two countries had reached new heights during Modi’s three terms in office, built on mutual trust, geographical proximity, deep civilisational links and a shared commitment to the prosperity of their peoples.
The President expressed gratitude for India’s steadfast friendship and for Prime Minister Modi’s personal support to Sri Lanka during challenging times.
Concluding his message, President Dissanayake said he looked forward to further strengthening the momentum in Sri Lanka–India relations as India continues its journey towards greater prosperity and achievement.
