Sri Lanka’s pottery industry is in crisis as demand for clay-based utensils continues to decline. Craftsmen told Mirror Business they are deeply concerned about the fall of this traditional industry, with consumers increasingly favouring imported utensils available in large quantities.
Clay-based utensils remain popular among Sri Lankan households due to their affordability and health benefits compared to modern cookware with aluminum and non-stick coatings.
The benefits of clay-based cookware include the absence of harmful chemicals, retention of nutrients, enhanced flavour, and balanced pH levels in food.
