Samudika Jayaratne assumed duties yesterday as the 42nd Auditor General of Sri Lanka, becoming the first woman to hold the country’s top auditing post.
Her appointment was unanimously approved by the Constitutional Council, bringing an end to a ten-month vacancy following the retirement of former Auditor General Chulantha Wickramaratne in April 2025.
The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne. The post had remained vacant after the Council rejected four nominees proposed by the President in recent months, triggering public debate and concerns over the independence of the National Audit Office, particularly after the nomination of a serving military officer in December.
