Rifa Musthapha was appointed as new President of the Women’s Chamber of Industries and Commerce (WCIC) during the association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), which took place recently. The event was graced by US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Atul Keshap.
“His Excellency Hon. Atul Keshap has since his posting in Sri Lanka shown us that he is a person who truly walks the talk of gender equality and has been a strong proponent of women’s rights, non-discrimination and equality based on the sound fundamentals of enabling and empowering women,” Musthapha said in her address at the WCIC AGM.
The guest speaker at the event, Jayanthi Kuru-Uthumpala, the very first Sri Lankan to conquer Mount Everest, shared her unique and inspiring story of her historic journey to the peak of Mount Everest and added further colour to the event.
The highlight of Mustapha’s address was the fruition of the WCIC’s long-awaited dream – the construction of WCIC Secretariat. With the kind intervention of Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka, the WCIC has been presented 8.9 perches of land on Perahera Mawatha, Colombo 3 to construct a customised headquarters.
This building will be dedicated to the women of Sri Lanka, enabling them to aspire to higher realms and wider goals keeping in line with the vision of the WCIC, which is to come together as an organisation of business and professional women to help urban and rural women develop their entrepreneurial skills to better their living standards.
