The Planters’ Association of Ceylon (PA) has placed Regional Plantation Companies (RPCs) on high alert as the industry begins the complex process of recovery following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah, according to a statement issued by PA.
While preliminary evaluations are currently underway, the Association confirmed that detailed estimates regarding the full extent of damage to estate infrastructure, housing, and cultivations are yet to be finalised. The disaster has already forced the prompt relocation of families from high-risk landslide and flood zones to temporary shelters in schools and places of worship.
Immediately following the cyclone, RPCs activated emergency response and safety protocols to secure the wellbeing of estate workers and surrounding communities. Management teams have since been clearing debris and clearing essential access routes to restore connectivity to isolated areas.
In collaboration with the Plantation Human Development Trust (PHDT) and various state authorities, the sector is now facilitating the distribution of essential food supplies, medicines, and temporary lodging, with a particular focus on vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children.
The economic impact on the plantation sector remains a primary concern for the treasury, given that tea and rubber are vital foreign exchange earners. Although the Colombo Tea Auctions have adjusted their schedules to maintain liquidity, the potential for long-term crop loss is still being weighed against the physical damage to factories and worker housing.
The PA noted that while transport access to most affected areas is gradually being restored, the sector is proactively reinforcing early warning procedures as the country enters the Northeast monsoon season.
“Transport access to most affected areas is gradually being restored, and the majority of estates are now reachable. While some temporary disruptions to electricity, water supply, or connectivity were experienced in certain localities, services are progressively returning to normal, subject to prevailing weather conditions,” it stated.
The Department of Irrigation continues to monitor the basin closely as moderate rainfall continues across the Central Highlands and wet zone.
