The precious stone which a Police Assistant attempted to sell in Anuradhapura for Rs.40 million recently had been identified as a Blue Sapphire by the officials of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority and the Department of Archaeology, sources said yesterday.

A police assistant attempted to sell the stone, kept in a brass casket, to two businessmen in Anuradhapura for Rs.40 million recently.

Officials of the Gem and Jewellery Authority told Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate Uresha De Silva that the stone was a genuine Blue Sapphire and that they were not in a position to evaluate it.
