UNP retract private members bill on SF

The UNP decided not to present the private members bill which provide for the quashing of all convictions of former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka. The UNP initially constituted a committee headed by Lakshma Kiriella and comprised Wijedasa Rajapaksha and Ajith. P. Perera to draft the bill.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella said that the former Army Commander had requested the UNP not to present the bill despite the draft being prepared ready to be presented to the parliamentary group for approval.

“The General told us not to go ahead because it might affect his legal position, we have to respect his request and therefore decided not to present the proposed private members bill” he said.

Kiriella, a Vice President of the UNP said that the reason for the proposed bill was the existing precedent in this regard.

“A similar private members bill was brought in by the Peoples Alliance government on behalf of former premier Sirimavo Bandaranaike which quashed all convictions against her. Her civic rights which were deprived earlier were given back to her through a bill of this nature” Kiriella said.

Kiriella went on to state that the motive of the proposed bill was to restore the former Army Commanders civic rights.“This was passed successfully and the bill that we were to present before parliament was also of a similar nature. The crux of this bill was the need to quash all convictions against the General and to ensure he is given all his legal rights that were taken away” he said. ( Hafeel Farisz)
