Some 41,750 removed from voters register

The total number of voters in the Jaffna electoral district has been reduced by another 41,750 this year due to reasons such as residents leaving the district to live in other parts of the country, officials said yesterday.

The total of 816,005 registered voters in the district was reduced to 485,791 last year and as a result the Elections Department reduced the number of MPs to be elected from the Jaffna district from nine to six.

The Department said the voters were removed from the lists because they had left the district and obtained citizenship in other countries while some had settled down in other districts.

An Elections Department official said another 41,750 voters were omitted from the 2011 voters’ register, and therefore, the number of MPs to be elected from Jaffna was likely to be reduced further.

"There are instances where people were not available at their homes during the registration period. Some others have left Jaffna to live in other districts. Anyway, this is a complicated issue,” the official said.

He said 16,990 names had been added to the 2011 list.

“If any person has been omitted from the list, he or she can appeal against it. We entertain such complaints,” he said. (By Kelum Bandara)
