Soldier in alleged attempt to rob ATM machine

A solider who allegedly attempted to rob an ATM machine belonging to the Kurunegala People’s Bank Branch today was arrested by police personnel on patrol. The 22-year-old suspect was attached to the Gemunu Watch at Nawandakulam in Jaffna and was on leave.

The police were alerted and arrived at the scene when the alarm was activated and the suspect had fled the scene and hid in the Kurunegala Public Library Grounds from where he was arrested. Police said the two teller machines had contained more than Rs.1.5 million.

Further inquiries are being conducted on the incident. (Pushpakumara Jayaratne)
