UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has directed that incidents, which took place during recent protests organized by the party in Badulla and Panadura be investigated, party sources said today.

Mr. Wickremesinghe told General Secretary Tissa Attanayake to probe the behaviour of two UNP members of Haliellya Pradeshiya Sabha and few others in Badulla on Sunday during a meeting attended by him.

He alleged that these members had acted in the manner they did because they were under the influence of liquor.

“I told them there is no place for indiscipline in UNP,” he said adding that if anyone though this government could be toppled without the assistance of the UNP, then they were mistaken.

He warned that no one in the UNP should consume liquor like members of other parties.

Meanwhile the party had appointed lawyer Joe Rajakaruna to look into the incidents that took place in Panadura. Some UNPers turned angry when Deputy Leader Sajith Premeadasa and senior member Karu Jayasuriya were not given speaking slots at the protest.

The agitated members then began disturbing the party leader’s speech Party officials said they were not given the opportunity to speak because it was a joint opposition protest and therefore the leaders of the other political parties that attended the protest had to be given an opportunity to speak.
