Police yet to act on controversial letter

Police are yet to take action against United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Gampola Urban Councillor Tharanga Vittachchi and Prime Minister’s ex-Coordinating Secretary Keerthi Sri Weerasinghe who are implicated in the letter asking that the container carrying heroin be released.

When asked about the progress in the investigations and whether they would be arrested, police spokesman Ajith Rohana said the allegations levelled against them were being investigated.

Mr. Weerasinghe’s statement has been recorded but Mr. Vittachchi has still not given his version of the story.

Meanwhile Mr. Weerasinghe said he had sent a letter to a company by the name of South Asia Gateway Terminals on a request made by Mr. Vittachchi who wanted his assistance to have the demurrage waived on a container carrying sanitary ware and lubricants held by Customs.

“We need more time to collect evidence on the detection of the biggest-ever haul of heroin in South Asia,” SSP Rohana said.

JHU Leader Ven. Omaple Sobitha Thera had written to Police Chief N.K Illangakone urging that action be taken against those responsible.

Mr. Weerasinghe had resigned from his post of coordinating secretary saying the decision was taken to assist the ongoing investigations and not to cause inconvenience or embarrassment to the Prime Minister and to his office. (Supun Dias)
