Police need to work closely with public: IGP

Inspector General of Police (IGP) N. K. Illangakoon has emphasised the need for the police to work closely and engage with the public in order to win their respect.

Speaking at an event organised by the Inspectors Association he also went on to say that although many good work and investigations are carried out by the police, one unfortunate incident paves way for the public to criticise the entire police.

The inspectors association which comprises nearly 8,500 inspectors in different categories commended the efforts taken by the IGP to appoint a committee to look into a number of proposals made by the association which includes making the police department a special department because, after the army it was police that made a lot of sacrifices. It will also help policemen get salary increments.

The importance and need to have a retirement scheme for policemen when they complete 22 years of service to the Police Department is the main proposal the association is lobbying with respective authorities at the moment.

Currently the police department is going through a massive restructuring programme to increase the capabilities and efficiency of the department.

A committee on police restructuring and supervision is looking into malpractices and inefficiency at police stations and complaints about shortcomings and negligence caused by police stations.

The committee will take steps to evolve a mechanism to provide a satisfactory service to the public and also to reduce shortcomings in the police that cause hardships to the public. (Supun Dias)
