The Police department yesterday denied allegations that tortures on suspects take place  within Police stations as a practice.

The Police denied any form of torture being used on suspects to gain confessions or information from them.

Police spokesman SP AjithRohana speaking to the Daily Mirror on the issue of torture prevailing in Police stations said that “Generally as a practice torture never takes place in Lankan Police stations.” The Spokesman who is also an Attorney – At – Law said that the issue of torture is often misconstrued by the media and the public. “Torture is often misconstrued by the Media and the public. When the Police go to apprehend a suspect if there is resistance the Police will use force in order to arrest him. This isn’t torture nor is using force to prevent damage to public or private property torture” he said.

Speaking on the impending amendment to the Criminal Procedure Code which allows the Police to detain suspects for specified offences for 48 hours, SP Rohana said that the amendment in its essence is not new law. “ This amendment was enacted as a special provisions act in 2007 and it is this that has been re introduced” he said.
