The Bakery Association said today that a decision on the price of bread will be made after today’s meeting with the members of the association. The price revision of bakery products would be likely if tax concessions are not provided, All Ceylon Bakery Owners’ Association President N.K. Jayawardena said.

“We will have to increase the prices of bread and all bakery products if we don’t get a tax concession,” Mr. Jayawardena said. According to him the prices of their vital ingredients have risen forcing them to seek a tax concession or increase their prices.

However he said that their association will be meeting with the Minister of Trade before making the final decision. He pointed to the escalating fuel and electricity charge that forces them to increase their prices.

However the baker owners have asked for an increase between Rs.3 to Rs.6.

“It is not only the fuel prices that haved increased but also the electricity charges too,” he added. Meanwhile the association will be meeting today while they will be meeting the Minister of Trade next week before they make a final decision, he said. Therefore the prices of bread will not see a change this evening, he added. (Sumaiya Rizvi)
