Naufer to attend daughter’s wedding

Mohamed Niyas Naufer who is sentenced to death over the killing of High Court Judge Sarath Ambeptiya filing a motion through his instructing attorney sought the court’s permissions to attend the wedding of his daughter.

He sought this permission from High Court Judge Sunil Rajapakse in connection with a pending case before the Colombo High Court. In this case he is indicted by the Attorney General for unlawful assembly to commit the murder of Mohamed Faruk in April 1999 at Hulftsdorp Street, Colombo.

Counsel Nihal Gunasinghe supporting the motion filed by Attorney–at–law Ravindra Silva submitted that he is making the request from the court on humanitarian grounds. He said the accused had already moved to dismiss the case before the court without calling for defense witnesses, for which the order is fixed for October 5. He said the accused is presently imprisoned in the Bogambara Prison on death row.

The daughter of the accused is getting married on Thursday according to Islamic rights.

The Counsel said accordingly the bride should be handed over to the groom by the father–in-law. Therefore he pleaded to allow the accused to attend the ceremony on Thursday. State Counsel Thushara Kumarage appearing for the Attorney General said that the accused is sentenced to death for the killing of Judge Sarath Ambepitiya and moved court to decide on the accused request at its own discretion.

High Court Judge Sunil Rajapaksa ordered the Prison authorities to act on their own accord in keeping up with the rules and regulations of the prison and to see to the possibility for the accused to attend his daughter’s wedding. (T.Farook Thajudeen)
