Mysterious illness closes Mulleriyawa ward

Employees and in-house patients of a ward at the Mulleriyawa National Institute of Mental Health have fallen ill mysteriously, forcing the authorities to close down the ward from yesterday, hospital sources said.

They said those who had fallen ill complained of respiratory problems. It is also learnt that a female staff member who worked at this ward number nine, had died two weeks ago and doctors had confirmed death was due to a heart problem.

Sources said another female nurse who works at the same ward, was in a critical condition at the Kandy Hospital.(Ranjan Kasturi)
