United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) General Secretary and Minister Susil Premajayantha today paid the cash deposit on behalf of President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s candidature for the January 8 presidential election.
Minister and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) National Organiser Basil Rajapaksa and Minister and Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) Leader Dinesh Gunawardana accompanied the UPFA General Secretary to the Elections Secretariat.
Additional Elections Commissioner U. Amaradasa said four other candidates -- Ven Battaramulle Seelaratana Thera of Jansetha Peramuna, M.B. Peminimulla of the Api Okkoma Rajawaru Sanvidanaya, Siritunga Jayasuriya of the Eksath Samajawadi Pakshaya and Pani Wijesiriwardana of the Samajawadi Samanatha Pakshaya – also paid their deposits.
Mr. Amaradasa said nominations would be accepted from 9.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. on December 8 at the Elections Secretariat auditorium and any objections could be submitted from 9.00 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. on the same day. He said objections could be based on a candidate’s nomination papers or with regard to a person who has signed the nomination paper.(Sandun A. Jayasekera)
