A police sergeant who is providing security for Western Province Governor Alavi Moulana was injured when his colleague accidentally shot him while attempting to unload the pistol.

He was admitted to the Kalubowila General Hospital and he is currently undergoing a surgery at the hospital, its director Dr. Anil Jasinghe said.

Police spokesman Ajith Rohana said that the suspect sergeant had not noticed that the magazine was inside the pistol. “Both of them were attempting to get into the jeep to go somewhere,” he said.

He was arrested shortly after the incident by the Dehiwala police.  (Supun Dias)
