Market dips below 5,000 points

The main All Share Price Index (ASI) of the Colombo bourse slipped below the 5,000 point mark during intra-day trading a while ago, with the market dipping over four per cent.

 The ASI as of now has lost 226 points while the more liquid Milanka Price Index has lost 177 points.

“Selling pressure amidst rising interest rates and the weakening rupee have negatively impacted the market sentiment,” a broker commenting on the market fall said.

 The spot US dollar quoted Rs.118.50-80 after opening at Rs.117.50-80 in the morning. (Indika Sakalasooriya)
