Man with counterfeit notes arrested inside a bus

A man who produced a counterfeit 100 rupee note to a bus conductor was caught by the passengers and was handed over to the Kalutara South police this morning.

He had got into the private bus bound to Matara from Colombo in the Kalutara area. After the passengers caught him when the conductor noticed the 100 rupee note he gave to buy a ticket to Hikkaduwa was fake, the bus drove directly to the Kalutara South police station.

Police media spokesman Ajith Rohana said that the suspect was arrested and found nine counterfeit 2,000 rupee notes, 39 counterfeit 100 rupee notes and 21 counterfeit 50 rupee notes that were in his possession.

The Kalutara South police was able to recover half of the counterfeit notes hidden inside his house in Thelwatta area in Hikkaduwa.

On November 23, last year the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) arrested the main suspect behind the largest racket which had printed nearly three million counterfeit notes since 2009.

The suspect was taken into custody by the CID with 20 counterfeit 100 rupee notes along with 49 fake seals during a raid that was carried out in Kesbewa.

It was revealed that he had been operating a network of people engaging in distributing counterfeit notes especially in urban areas. (Supun Dias)
