Mahela, Sanga under political pressure: JVP

22 Jan 2012 - {{hitsCtrl.values.hits}}

The JVP today charged senior Sri Lankan cricketers Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara were being subjected to undue influence by government politicians to accept the captaincy of the national team.

JVP MP Vijitha Herath said both Mahela and Kumar had expressed reluctance to accept the captaincy because of this pressure. The JVP MP charged the government was using the cancer hospital of these cricketers as a tool to pressurise them.

Mr. Hearh said there was no issue with either Mahela or Kumar taking over from T.M. Dilshan but stressed the new captain should not be subjected to political pressure.

He said cricket was plunged into crisis and would remain in that situation as long as the sports minister interfered in the selection process. (Yohan Perera)
