Laws to make eye tests compulsory for drivers?

The weak eye sight of drivers is a factor for road accidents and new regulations have to be introduced to make it compulsory to test the eye sight of drivers annually if road accidents are to be minimized, Health minister Maithripala Sirisena said today.

Addressing a function held at the Colombo Eye Hospital to check the eye sight of school van drivers in the Western Province to mark the World Eye-sight Day, Minister Sirisena said poor eye sight of drivers was one of the main contributory factors for major road accidents.

“The checking of the eye sight of drivers is compulsory in other countries. Unfortunately we do not have such procedure. I firmly believe that if we have a system to check the eye sight of drivers annually and take remedial measure, we could reduce fatal road accidents to a large extent,” Minister Sirisena said.
