Lankan nationals arrested by Indian coastal police

Two Sri Lankan nationals were arrested by the police while attempting to escape to the island nation clandestinely from Rameswaram coast, on Friday night.

Police said that they were hiding in a boat at Rameswaram hoping to leave for Sri Lanka early on Saturday. While one of them was a Sinhalese, the other was a Sri Lankan Tamil.

Sleuths of the Coastal Security Group and marine police had intensified patrolling along the coast after they received a tip off that a few individuals were planning to leave the country in a boat via Rameswaram.

Police said that during the patrolling, the coastal security group personnel spotted two people hiding in a mechanised boat, owned by one Munusamy near the fishing jetty. One of them was identified as Disa (53), a Sinhalese and Raveendran, a Sri Lankan Tamil. The police picked up the duo on suspicion. During interrogation, the two revealed that they did not possess valid travel documents.

Ravindran had visited Tamil Nadu a year ago and had stayed here since he lost his travel documents. Disa, who was involved in various trades in Mumbai for several years had also lost his passport and hence decided to travel clandestinely.

They had approached two persons for assistance, who had promised to help them travel. It was under the instructions of the two that Disa and Ravindran were waiting in the boat, police said. Police have launched a hunt for the two persons. (The Times of india)
