JJ plans to take legal action

UNP MP Jayalath Jayawardene who was hit by tear gas at the protest lead by his party at Colombo Fort last week and had a short spell in hospital claims that he has a bone to pick with the government and is planning to go on a legal path with a likely fundamental rights case.

Dr. Jayawardene in an interview with the Daily Mirror yesterday said he is weighing the possibility of filing a fundamental rights case against the attack. He said he would also take up the matter with the Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) shortly.

He is also expected to raise a privilege issue in Parliament as well bringing the matter to the notice of Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa.

“This was an illegal and undemocratic act on the part of the government as there is legal provision for any one to hold a peaceful protest,” he said.

Dr. Jayawardene who was discharged yesterday headed towards the ‘Church of Our lady of Madhu in Mannar tp give thanks to our lady for his speedy recovery. (Yohan Perera)
