Houses to be demolished in Cmb: UNP

The main opposition UNP today charged that some 3529 houses located in 54 acres in the Colombo are to be demolished according to the government’s city development plan.

UNP MP Gayantha Karunatilleke told a news conference that houses situated in 47 different locations are to be demolished according to this plan.

Accordingly 400 houses in Kadiranawatte in Mattakuliya, 335 houses in Kalipullawatte in Dematagoda, 120 houses on Maura Place in Havelock Road, 108 houses down Kolambage Mawatha in Colombo 6, 468 houses down Sirimavo Bandaranaike Mawatha Colombo, 249 houses in Lock Gate Land Colombo 13, 262 houses down Torrington Avenue and 1048 houses down Apple Watta are some of the houses that are to be demolished.

This fresh allegation from the opposition came despite the assurance given that no one in the city would be evicted and the low income group residents would be provided decent houses in the same location they are residing in, at the moment.

However Mr. Karunatilleke charged that several ministers are giving different pledges when it comes to housing for low income people. He therefore said one Minister had pledged to build 75,000 houses in the city while a ruling party candidate for the Colombo Municipal Council had pledged to build 35,000 houses. This inconsistency he said, meant that, the government itself is not aware of the problem. (Yohan Perera)
