Govt. - TNA talks at standstill

The political dialogue between the government and the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has come to an abrupt end over a row on the proposed Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) which is to be set up to evolve a solution to the national question, the TNA said today.

TNA MP Suresh Premachandran said the government had not communicated with his party with regard to the deadlock.

He said the government was insisting that his party should participate in the PSC deliberations.

“If we cannot reach any political understanding with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), the largest party in the ruling coalition, how can we reach any agreement with the extremist parties in the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA)? The PSC consists of all these parties. It may be another delaying tactic by the government,” he said.

Mr. Premachandran said the talks that were scheduled for January 17, 18 and 19 did not take place, and neither did the government give any reasons for it.
