Galle Stadium - UNESCO wants development work suspended

The UNESCO which decided to carry out a special investigation to determine whether the development of the Galle Cricket Stadium had any adverse effect on the historical Galle Fort, has informed the government to suspend the development of the stadium.

National Heritage Ministry Secretary Kanthi Wijetunga said that UNESCO had wanted a confirmation on the situation before February 28, 2012.

Ms. Wijetunga said the government would have to send a report on the real plot plan on the historical Fort to UNESCO before December 1 this year. (Ranjan Kasthuri)
