The CID is investigating a fraud which is alleged to have taken place at the Polonnaruwa SP’s office where an office accountant had reportedly withdrawn funds set apart to be given to policemen as distress loans whenever the need arises.

Several policemen in the Polonnaruwa Division had applied for distress loans but only a few had managed to obtain them.

The suspect is alleged to have informed the loan applicants that the police department was not in a position to provide the funds. Policemen who were suspicious about what must have been happening had complained to the senior police officers.

Detectives investigating the fraud said legal action would be taken against the errant accountant if he was found guilty of having pilfered the money. (SD)
