Chinese national fined Rs.100,000

A Colombo Court today imposed a fine of Rs.100,000 on a Chinese national who pleaded guilty for selling foreign liquor without a permit and possessing a stock of illegally imported cigarettes.

The accused, Chang, was arrested by the Kollupitiya Police at a business outlet in Kollupitiya with 47 bottles of foreign arrack and 600 illegally imported cigarettes.

When the Chinese national was produced before Colombo Fort Magistrate Kanishka Wijeratne, defence counsel P.C. de Silva and Sudarshani Gunaratne who appeared for the accused stated that their client had possessed the concerned amount of liquor and cigarettes for his own use.

However, the defence counsel admitted that their client would plead guilty to the charges. Having considered the submissions, the Magistrate ordered the accused pay fine of Rs.100,000. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)
