CBK admirer gives nominations with Vimukthi’s name

A nomination paper for the Kurunegala Municipal Council which contained the names of former President Chandrika Kumaratunga’s children Yasodara and Vimukthi had been submitted by an alleged “mentally unsound” person who had been sending letters and parcels to the former President for the past two years, her office said.

The nomination paper which created a media flutter was rejected by Kurunegala Assistant returning officer Kusum Hettige as it was not from a registered political party. The nomination paper was submitted by a political party called “Janatha Balawega Pakshaya” of which the leader has been cited as a person called Asantha Ruwan Weerasinghe - a resident of Kuliyapitiya.

When contacted the former President’s office said the person had been identified as a mentally unstable security guard who had been sending parcels and letters to the former president by registered post over the past two years.

The former President’s office said it did not know of the nomination papers until they were contacted by the media on the matter. “Ms. Kumaratunga’s two children Yasodara and Vimukthi are currently residing abroad and have not given in nominations for any election. They were fake nominations and have fortunately been rejected,” an official from the former President’s office said.

The official said the mentally unsound man had been sending letters and other offerings such as sweep tickets, safety pins and boxes through registered post addressed to the former president. She said in the letters which had been arriving regularly at the former president’s office for more than two years, the man had said that he had started his own political party named the Janatha Bala Wegaya asking for Ms. Kumaratunga’s support.

“It is unknown as to whether Ms. Kumaratunga will take legal action but it is unlikely as this was an act of a mentally unstable person. It is obvious that this was done merely for publicity,” she said. (Olindhi Jayasundere and Pushpakumara Jayaratne)
