Bread prices to rise with electricity

After the announcement of the increase in the electricity tariff rates, the All Ceylon Bakery Owners’ Association said yesterday that there was a ‘huge possibility’ of an increase in the prices of all bakery products.

N.K. Jayawardena, the chairmen of the Association told Daily Mirror that the bakers would have no alternative but to increase the prices of bread and other products or to reduce their weight when the cost of electricity goes up.

“The escalation of the electricity prices will affect the entire industry. First they increased gas prices, then diesel prices  and now electricity prices. However, this step will make us lose whatever profits we earn , as now we will be forced to pay for electricity at the new rate with the money we earned as profit,” he said.

Meanwhile, reacting to the recent electricity price hike, the Public and Private Trade Union Confederation revealed yesterday that they would meet today to discuss this and take immediate action against this move of the government.

Saman Ratnapriya, the co-convener of the Public and Private Trade Union Confederation, speaking to Daily Mirror, criticised this move made by the government and said it was unjust and that they would discuss it at today’s meeting with trade unionists and after that decide on a course of action.

He added that the Confederation had collected signatures last month to a public petition against the escalation of electricity prices and handed it to the government on April 3.

“We collected over 50,000 signatures and handed the petition to President Rajapaksa. According to this new amendment the low income earners in our country will have to pay double the amount they now pay for electricity. The ordinary citizens will have to pay Rs.6 for a unit of electricity which now costs Rs.3. This move by the government is very unfair and only affects the poor rather than who use many units of electricity,” he said.

Ratnapriya accused the government of seeking the assistance of the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to increase the electricity rates this time. “The conduct of the PUC is also reprehensible, they said that they would listen to public opinion but this proved to be a complete lie,” he said.
