Urgent debate in Parliament today on disappearance of USD 2.5 million from Treasury

Colombo, May 5 (Daily Mirror) - The government today agreed to grant an urgent debate on the disappearance of USD 2.5 million from the Treasury, following a request by the Opposition.

Chief Opposition Whip MP Gayantha Karunathileke told Parliament the government refused a day's debate during this parliament week on the matter and that the Opposition submitted a written request for an urgent debate under Standing Orders 19/2.

Leader of the House Bimal Rathnayake informed the House that the government is agreeable to holding the debate today from 3.30 pm to 5.00 pm.

However, a tense situation arose after the Opposition demanded that the debate must go on till 5.30 pm.

The government said it is not possible as the main business for the day is scheduled only till 5.00 pm.
