The National Tsunami Early Warning Centre at the Department of Meteorology said that there is no tsunami threat to Sri Lanka at present due to an earthquake to the magnitude of 6.5 in the Richter scale struck about 310 km (190 miles) southeast of Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Indian region.
Therefore, the coastal areas of Sri Lanka are declared safe.
The public is further informed that this message is announced in consultation with relevant national and international agencies, the Department said.
