Two arrested for assaulting ex- PSD officer of Maithripala Sirisena

Two persons have been arrested by the Talangama Police in connection with an assault on a Police Sergeant attached to the Ex-Presidential Security Division (PSD) of former President Maithripala Sirisena.

Police said the incident reportedly took place outside a studio of a leading TV channel in Pelawatte last night when former President Sirisena was participating in a political programme.

Only the driver of the back up security vehicle was present on the road outside the studio while other security officers were inside the studio when the incident occurred.

It was reported that five men who were under influence of alcohol were behaving an unruly manner near the backup security jeep of the former President. The men had attacked the Police Sergeant following an argument.

The injured officer was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.

The arrested suspects were identified as residents of Koswatte and Battaramulla. The Thalangama Police are conducting further investigations using the CCTV footages at the location and also recorded several statements. Investigations are underway to arrest remaining three suspects.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
