Two Indians nabbed at airport with stockpile of medicinal drugs

Two Indian nationals were arrested this morning while attempting to smuggle a stockpile of drugs into the country, the customs media spokesman and Deputy Customs Director Sudatta Silva said.

He said the Indians were arrested soon after they arrived at the airport at 1.15 am by the airport customs officers.

He said the drugs were brought into the country without legal permission from Health Ministry and the Drug Regulatory Authority, the spokesman said.

The Indians flew into the country by Indian Airlines from Chennai, he said.

The drugs were found concealed in their personal baggages. The 10 types of medicines that were found in the baggage are used to treat various ailments, Mr. Silva said.

Further investigations were carried out by the Customs officials at the airport, the spokesman added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama and T.K.G. Kapila)
