BBC - US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian have reportedly signed an initial agreement aimed at ending ongoing hostilities between the two countries, according to details released from the event.
Under what is being described as a 14-point memorandum, both sides have committed to continued negotiations over the next 60 days to reach a final peace agreement. The period is described as “extendable with mutual consent.”
The deal reportedly includes major provisions such as the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic maritime route critical to global energy shipments, as well as a $300 billion (£224 billion) reconstruction plan for Iran. It also outlines the lifting of “all types of sanctions” imposed by the United States on Iran.
Trump, who has previously warned Iran to strictly adhere to the terms of any agreement, was filmed signing a hard copy of the document on Wednesday during a dinner hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron at the Palace of Versailles.
An official signing ceremony involving US and Iranian representatives had been scheduled to take place in Switzerland on Friday. However, it remains unclear whether that event will proceed as planned following the initial signing.
Further details on the agreement and its implementation are expected as negotiations continue over the coming weeks.
