Tense situation reported outside Moratuwa Police station

Moratuwa, Jan 20 (Daily Mirror) - A tense situation unfolded outside the Moratuwa Police Station, where over 100 people gathered to protest the arrest of several residents of the area this morning.

Police said the unrest began when a group of individuals blocked the road due to a pandal being constructed in front of a church in the area. 

When traffic officers attempted to clear the obstruction, they were met with resistance, leading to a confrontation.

Two police officers were assaulted during the incident and are currently receiving treatment at the Panadura Hospital. 

In connection with the assault and the disturbance, the Moratuwa Police have arrested five individuals for obstructing their duties.

In response, local residents have gathered outside the police station to protest the arrests. 

Several priests, including Rev. Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando, have arrived at the Police Station to de-escalate the situation.
