Colombo, May 23 (Daily Mirror) - The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Kathmandu celebrated International Tea Day 2026 under the theme “159 Years of Excellence in Ceylon Tea” at the official residence of the Ambassador in Kathmandu.
The event brought together representatives from the Government of Nepal, tea industry stakeholders and distinguished guests to commemorate the heritage and global reputation of Ceylon Tea.
The programme commenced with the arrival and registration of guests, followed by the formal opening ceremony and keynote address by Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Nepal, Ruwanthi Delpitiya.
Addressing the gathering, the Ambassador highlighted the rich heritage and international recognition of Ceylon Tea, noting that the industry marks 159 years of excellence this year. Referring to the International Tea Day 2026 theme, “Sustaining Tea, Supporting Communities,” she reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to sustainability, ethical production practices and the wellbeing of tea-growing communities.
She further stated that Ceylon Tea remains one of Sri Lanka’s most recognised global brands, reflecting the country’s tradition of quality, authenticity and excellence. The Ambassador also underscored tea’s role as a symbol of hospitality, cultural connection and friendship between Sri Lanka and Nepal.
The programme also featured presentations on the Food and Agriculture Organization Intergovernmental Group themes for International Tea Day 2026, along with screenings of official campaign visuals and videos.
A presentation on Ceylon Tea was delivered by Embassy Commercial Officer Bibek Wosti, followed by videos showcasing Sri Lanka’s tea heritage, quality standards and export significance.
A key highlight of the event was an exhibition and tasting session featuring teas from Sri Lanka’s seven tea-growing regions, allowing guests to experience the unique flavours and characteristics of regional Ceylon Tea varieties. The exhibition also displayed a range of tea grades, herbal teas and specialty teas.
Guests were further treated to a Sri Lankan culinary experience accompanied by Ceylon tea and tea-based mocktails, while Dilmah showcased its range of Ceylon Tea products during the programme.
