Colombo, Feb 27 (Daily Mirror) - Former Sri Lanka fast-bowling legend Lasith Malinga has called on cricket fans to remain patient and continue supporting the national team, insisting that another ICC World Cup triumph is within reach.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Malinga reflected on Sri Lanka’s historic cricket journey since winning their first World Cup in 1996. He said that while the country experienced early exits in some tournaments and suffered heartbreak after losing in four World Cup finals, true supporters stood by the team through years of hardship, criticism, and disappointment.
According to Malinga, it was that unwavering patience and belief that ultimately paved the way for Sri Lanka’s 2014 World Cup victory. He said that those who endured 18 years of struggle before the 2014 success proved that persistence and loyalty to the game can lead to glory.
“Giving up is not the solution to the game,” Malinga stated, expressing confidence that Sri Lanka can win another World Cup. He acknowledged that 12 years have passed since the last triumph but stressed that many knowledgeable and passionate supporters continue to stand by the team — and will do so until the next title is secured.
