The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has launched an investigation into allegations that former United National Party (UNP) General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam committed an offence of corruption by recruiting employees to the Presidential Secretariat and deploying them for his personal and political activities.
As part of the ongoing investigation, Kariyawasam was summoned to appear before the Commission today (21) for further inquiries into the alleged use of Presidential Secretariat employees for political work.
However, CIABOC said that as of this afternoon, Kariyawasam had not appeared before the Commission and had not informed officials of any reason for his absence.
The investigation is being conducted under provisions of the Bribery Act relating to the misuse of public servants for private or political purposes, which constitutes an offence of corruption.
