Colombo, July 11 (Daily Mirror) - The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has strongly criticised the government's reported move to extend the retirement age of higher court judges, alleging that the proposal is politically motivated and poses a threat to democracy.
In a statement, SLPP General Secretary and Attorney-at-Law Sagara Kariyawasam described the proposal as a "despicable and shameless" attempt aimed at serving political interests, claiming that there is significant public opposition to the move.
He said the SLPP has consistently opposed the proposal, arguing that it would deal a serious blow to the country's democratic institutions.
Kariyawasam also welcomed the reported resolution passed by the Judges' Association opposing the proposal, stating that the judges themselves raising concerns over the move should be given serious consideration in a democratic society.
He further said the SLPP had previously called on Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa to unite all opposition parties in Parliament to oppose the proposed extension of the retirement age of higher court judges.
The SLPP General Secretary reaffirmed the party's commitment to safeguarding democracy, stating that it would continue to oppose the proposal regardless of any threats or pressure.
