Quazi Court Judge, wife remanded for soliciting Rs. 2,300 bribe

Colombo, August 25 (Daily Mirror) - Kalmunai Maradamadu Quazi Court Judge and his wife were ordered to be remanded till September 8 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama today, over allegations of soliciting and accepting a bribe of Rs. 2,300 as “service charges” from a person who was paying maintenance for his five children.

The suspects, Quazi Judge Palil Maulana and his wife, Samayal Vewanam were remanded.

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) informed that the complainant had been paying monthly maintenance for his five children and in the course of those payments, the suspect Quazi Judge had demanded Rs. 2,300 as a service charge.

Investigations further revealed that the said service charge had been collected by the judge’s wife.

Following a complaint lodged with the Bribery Commission, undercover officers were deployed, leading to the arrest of the accused couple and their subsequent production before court.
